What can you achieve at a conservatoire? Where can it take you?

As an aspiring dancer, there are two pathways available to you after Key Stage 5 (College or Sixth form), one being going to a Conservatoire. There are many available courses a dancer can take as stated below, I have also narrowed down the choices to look at in detail 3 specific UK conservatoires and a key course they each have available.

Three UK Conservatoires

Contemporary dance at London Contemporary Dance School:

  • 3 years long

  • Studio-based classes, enhanced by a range of contextual studies that relate to the experience of performing, making, researching and understanding dance.

  • Works with other dance industries

  • You’ll be recognized and treated as an individual with your own unique needs and progression journey.

Alumni:

The internationally renowned musical theatre choreographer Anthony Van Laast, who choreographed musicals including Mama Mia, Sister Act and Beauty and the Beast.









Ballet and Contemporary Dance at Rambert School:

  • 1 year+

  • Daily ballet classes, daily pointe work, Pas de deux, coaching, learning performance and classical ballet repertoire.

  • Daily contemporary classes range from the teaching of foundational techniques such as the Martha Graham and Merce Cunningham techniques, through release-based styles and newer techniques such as Gaga.

  • There are regular student choreographic platforms, where students of all years can show their works in the theatre or online.

Christopher Bruce – a very well known contemporary-ballet choreographer with famous works such as the Ghost Dance (one of his most celebrated pieces) , Swansong, Shadows and of course Rooster.




Dance & Creative Enterprise at Northern School of Contemporary Dance:

  • Define and develop your choreographic interests and artistic voice

  • Learn tools in arts project management, business planning, fundraising and marketing, essential for independent artists

  • Gain opportunities to realize your creative ambitions

  • Join a network of dance makers, performers and professionals

Tamsin Fitzgerald, the artistic Director of 2Faced Dance Company and choreographer. The company even performed at the MTV awards.
