My Dance Journey

My interest in dance begun in my great grandmas hallway with my two cousins who both attended a local dance academy, Attitude Dance. I didn't have the confidence to join their dance group and so I stuck to our fortnightly family performances that we put on. As we all got too big to rehearse in a tiny hallway and stopped planning performances i missed dancing and so i joined MDC.
Montsaye Dance Company was a dance group led by our school's dance teacher Miss Malins at lunchtimes and after school. I was a part of that team for 2.5 years (13yrs - 15yrs) and in that time I participated in a performance at my towns summer fair, many school dance shows as well as Platform at Bedford University, 3 times! Platform is an annual arrangement where dance groups of all ages from all over the local areas get to take part in a work shop, photoshoot and most importantly perform a dance with costume makeup and lightening. Taking part in Platform has by far been one of my favourite dance experiences because it was an opportunity to, just for one day, live in the life of a professional dancer. Not only that but the workshops were always a new style each year and so it taught me how differently dancers from each style use their body.

During the same time as MDC I also took part in the school's cheerleading team. Strength, balance and tricks such as forwards and backwards walkovers were learnt and improved through this experience and so it created a framework which lead to the quality of my current dance skills. After being part of the crew for a year I became captain which introduced me to further qualities such as confidence and leadership.

As my interest in dance increased more and more I regretted not choosing it as one of my GCSE options. This made me sure that i wanted to choose Dance at A-Level. My experience of it so far has taught me so much. The history of dance, the most famous practitioners through time, the names and meaning behind all of their works, how to dance and choreograph all of their different styles and so much more.

From this point onwards I will be taking part in another school show and hopefully a final Platform in this final year at Montsaye Academy. After that I hope to continue some form of dancing throughout higher education because it would be such a shame for it all all to end and lose all of the progress I have made through the years.
